Computer animation is essentially a digital successor to the stop motion techniques using 3D models, and traditional animation techniques using frame-by-frame animation of 2D illustrations. Computer-generated animations are more controllable than other more physically based processes, constructing miniatures for effects shots or hiring extras for crowd scenes, and because it allows the creation of images that would not be feasible using any other technology. It can also allow a single graphic artist to produce such content without the use of actors, expensive set pieces, or props. To create the illusion of movement, an image is displayed on the computer monitor and repeatedly replaced by a new image that is similar to it, but advanced slightly in time (usually at a rate of 24, 25 or 30 frames/second). This technique is identical to how the illusion of movement is achieved with television and motion pictures.
The 5 Types of Animation:
1. Traditional Animation
Traditional animation, at times, also called ‘cel animation’, is one of the oldest types of animation. In this type of animation, an animator draws every frame to create the animation sequence, similar to what they used to do in the past days of Disney. If you have ever had one of those flip-books while you were a kid, you would learn what I mean. Sequential drawings screened instantly back to back create the illusion of movement.
2. 2D Animation
This style has become a trend in the last decade as a result of the accessibility of the technology and the development of online video. Similar to other vector-based animation programs, Flash is affordable and user-friendly.
3. 3D Animation
The mechanism of 3D animation works relatively in a very different way than traditional animation. However they both entail an understanding of the similar principles of movement and configuration, but the technical skill set is poles apart for every individual task. While traditional animation entails you to be an astonishing draftsman, computer animation doesn’t. 3D animation is more tantamount to playing with puppets rather than drawing.
4. Motion Graphics
Motion Graphics while still being considered a type of innovative animation, it is very different from other types of animation. Unlike the different kinds on our list, it is not character or story driven. It’s the art of imaginatively moving graphic elements or texts, generally for profitable or publicity purposes.
5. Stop Motion
Stop motion is carried out by capturing a photo of an object, and then moving it only a little bit and capturing another photo. The process is revised and when the photos are played back to back, they give the illusion of undertaking. This is tantamount to customary animation but it utilizes real-life materials rather than drawings.
